YZER FRONT 4 - Leke - Vladslo - Houthulst
Year of visit: 2005
We cruise along side roads, through the former German lines of the Yzer front, Belgium, from Leke in the north, southward via Vladslo to Houthulst in the south.
We may deduct from the extern staircase, that this bunker may have been used as an observation post.
The roof may have been also used for anti-aircraft machine guns.
The interior of this bunker...
... and a view through one of the fire holes.
On the far end of the cemetery stand the two statues, ...
.... representing parents, mourning over the death of their sons.
This pair of statues has been designed by the female German artist ...
.... and mother of a soldier buried here, Käthe Kollwitz.
Near Vladslo we spotted this German bunker.
Thousands of Belgian soldiers and officers, ...
... fallen during the end offensive of late September 1918 are buried here.
A last view over the Yzer river....
